What I am Most Thankful for this Memorial Day

Many service men and women have died defending the freedoms we so often take for granted in America.  I love that we have a day set aside to remember those sacrifices and be grateful.  This year, though, it brings to mind for me, the one who first set the example.  I am thankful to Jesus Christ, who willingly gave up His life so that we could live and walk in freedom and relationship with God.  "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."  John 15:13

The following verses, taken from the Time to Revive (NASB) New Testament, expound on what Jesus' ultimate sacrifice means for us:

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."  Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."  Romans 6:23

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."  Romans 5:8

"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast."  Ephesians 2:8-9

"that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart, a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."  Romans 10:9-10

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come."  2 Corinthians 5:17
